The majority of women undergoing breast preserving surgery may also consult with a radiation therapist early on. If radiation is recommended, Northern Westchester Hospital can offer intra-operative radiation therapy (IORT), an innovative technology, that involves partial breast radiation delivered at the actual time of surgery.
Although this type of radiation treatment is fairly new, and only for patients meeting certain criteria, the preliminary data are extremely encouraging. IORT allows patients to receive their first treatment dose while in surgery, lessening the number of post-operative radiation treatments required following breast surgery.
The type of radiation therapy recommended by your surgeon and radiation oncologist will depend on your diagnosis.
Medical Oncology – Chemotherapy
A medical oncologist will also be consulted. This doctor can be seen pre-surgery, however oncology therapy is usually tailored to the size, type, and stage of the cancer, which can only be determined after surgery. Infusion treatments are delivered by chemotherapy-certified registered nurses who will educate and support you and your care partner. They are present with you throughout the entire procedure. By providing state-of-the-art compassionate care under one roof, The Breast Institute in New York can ensure that your plan of treatment will be developed and carried out through the close collaboration of our team of cancer treatment and follow-up experts.
