Meet Our Medical Leadership
Philip C. Bonanno, MD, FACS
Director of The Breast Program and Director of The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery and Medicine
In 1998, Dr. Bonanno and Northern Westchester Hospital started The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery and Medicine, a specialized operating suite for plastic and reconstructive surgery. Through his collaboration with dedicated breast surgeons, the multidisciplinary Breast Program was formed, followed by the opening of The Breast Institute in 2008.
Dr. Bonanno has held several teaching appointments at Downstate Medical Center, New York University, and New York Medical College in the specialties of head and neck surgery and plastic surgery. Dr. Bonanno has numerous publications in his areas of specialization.
Anthony C. Cahan, MD FACS
Chief of Breast Surgical Services
Dr. Cahan’s post-graduate training included an internship and residency in general surgery at The New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical College, where he focused on vascular and thoracic procedures, oncologic treatments of the breast and other areas, and endoscopic techniques. Among his many research projects were cancer studies conducted at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Beth Israel Hospital.
While completing his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1982, he received the Alfred Moritz Michaelis Prize for Efficiency in Medicine.
In addition to his duties at NWH, Dr. Cahan also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at New York Medical College and an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Surgery at Cornell University Medical College. At Beth Israel Hospital, he was the physician-in-charge of the Comprehensive Breast Service, as well as a member of the Cancer Committee. In 2010, he was named Northern Westchester Hospital’s Physician of the Year.
Alfred Tinger, MD, FACRO
Chief of Radiation Oncology
Dr. Tinger is board-certified in Radiation Oncology and has been actively involved in medical research throughout his career. His research results have been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, and he is currently a reviewer for such publications as the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, and Physics.
Michael H. Rosenberg, MD, FACS
Chief of Plastic Surgery
After graduating summa cum laude from Columbia University in 1983, Dr. Michael H. Rosenberg earned his medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his residency in general surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Rosenberg has taught at the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, and has numerous publications on the topic of plastic surgery.

Bonnie Litvack, MD
Medical Director of Women’s Imaging
Under Dr. Litvack’s leadership, the Women’s Imaging Center at Northern Westchester Hospital has been acclaimed as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. Dr. Litvack is fellowship trained in MRI and brings extensive experience in all aspects of women’s imaging, including mammography, to Northern Westchester Hospital.
Dr. Litvack has served as the president of the Westchester County Medical Society and as president of the Westchester Academy of Medicine. Dr. Litvack has also served as the New York State Radiological Society’s delegate to the Medical Society of the State of New York and is a counselor to the American College of Radiology. She is also an alternate delegate to the American Medical Association from the Medical Society of the State of New York.
During her career, Dr. Litvack has received numerous awards and honors including the Capital District Psychiatric Center Citation of Excellence in Community Service, the Suffolk County Medical Society Doctors of Tomorrow Scholarship, and a National Institute of Health Grant in Family Practice.
Dr. Litvack has presented her research at national and regional medical conferences. She is a member of the American College of Radiology, the American Medical Association, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Radiologic Society of North America, the Medical Society of the State of New York, and the Westchester County Medical Society.
Karen Arthur, MD, FACS
Medical Director of Northern Westchester Hospital’s Breast Institute at Yorktown
Prior to her work at NWH, Dr. Arthur provided services as the Chief of the Department of Surgery at the Westchester Medical Group, was Chief of the Department of Surgery at Northeast Permanente Medical Group, and was a partner at Southern California Permanente Medical Group. From 1979-1987 she was a clinical instructor in surgery at the University of California – Irvine.
David A. Palaia, MD, FACS
Dr. Palaia specializes in a full range of aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. His expertise runs the gamut from cosmetic procedures—facialplasties, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, lipoplasty, body contouring, and breast surgery—to reconstructive breast surgical options.
He has served as a guest lecturer, educating surgeons at medical conferences for hospital training programs as well as live surgical symposia. Dr. Palaia has volunteered with Healing the Children to help correct cleft and other palate deformities in children in Honduras.
